Double-Crested Cormorant in BVS DCCOs seen Yes, I've been checking 4 Island Lake a lot this month and have seen a number of Double-crested Cormorants there every time. They were also at the lake in Stallion Springs on March 14. Thanks for the post! Richard
Not much at Butterbredt in the afternoon Woodpecker ID Kerri, The woodpecker you photographed is either a Ladderback or a Nuttall's. Both have barred backs like your photo, and both have been seen at Butterbredt. On Ladderbacks, the white stripes go up further on the back like your photo, but they have a buffy brown color on their face rather than white like the Nuttall's. Ladderbacks generally inhabit the desert areas, while Nuttall's are more likely to be found in the oaks. But that's not a hard and fast rule, especially along the eastern Sierras where their ranges overlap. Hard to tell from your photo. Any distinction on my part would merely be a guess. We can rule out Downy or Hairy Woodpeckers - both have a large white patch on their backs rather than white stripes. Thanks for sharing! Richard
April 2nd Sawyer Lake Which Egret Is It??? My first guess is Snowy Egret because of the black bill and black legs. But wait! The feet and lores should be yellow. So what gives? Can anyone else make a reasonable ID from this photo? Bill says there were 3 Black-crowned Night-Herons along with this white egret. That's great! I haven't seen Black-crowned Night-Herons at Sawyer Lake since it went dry last year. Richard
On the Bluebird Trail Backyard nest box reporting Hi, Karen I have 4 nest boxes in my yard. Which forms you would prefer I use to document this year's nesting activity? Richard
On the Bluebird Trail Backyard Nest Box Reporting Form OK, folks. I heard from Karen about what form to use to report results of your backyard nesting boxes. Click this link to download a PDF file from Cornell Nestwatch -- http://www.nestwatch.org/NetCommunity/bbimages/PDFs/NWDataSheet.pdf
Bird banding at the Kern River Preserve Great photos! Mary, Thanks for sharing your experience. I really enjoyed the photos. There's always so much to do during spring migration that I'm bound to skip something good. It's great when I can hear what I missed. Richard
Acorn Woodpecker: The Clown of the Oak Woodlands Please state what help you are looking for... Just a guess, but perhaps you should be reading this article instead - Deterring Woodpeckers http://www.tehachapibirdclub.com/birding-articles/88-deterring-woodpeckers.html
Bandtails! Flying Left at Eleven O’Clock! Great nest box photo Wow! You can even see the nestling inside. Great photo.
Ash-throated Flycatcher Photos? Do you have any photos of the wildflower displays?
Spring Migration in Bear Valley WEWP Thanks for the tip. I figured they were around somewhere, I just haven't seen or heard them yet.
On the Bluebird Trail Wow! I need to get out there and see the show! This year is great for wildflowers, even in Tehachapi.
Green-tailed Towhee Thanks for the report That's great to hear. We were looking for the Green-tailed Towhees a couple weeks ago by the Norbertine Monastery where they spend the summer, but didn't see any. Sounds like you caught one that was migrating through. Great sighting! What time of day were you hiking around Water Canyon? Morning? I'd like to check it out myself soon. Richard
Tehachapi Sightings - September, 2010 Winter birds are beginning to arrive First sightings this month of White-crowned and Golden-crowned Sparrows. Still some warblers passing through as well.
Tehachapi Sightings - October, 2010 Waterfowl are here! October was a great month for first of the fall waterfowl sightings. We found most everything on our checklist except a few of the rare species. Best of all was a single male Hooded Merganser hiding in the reeds at Sawyer Lake.
California Quail & Mountain Quail: Precocial Gallinaceous Galliformes Mountain Quail food According to All About Birds website, Mountain Quail eat Seeds, fruits, flowers, and a few insects. You can read more here: http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Mountain_Quail/id
Our Trip to Salton Sea Not a soul in sight! Well, that's just the way I take photos. I lean more to scenic landscapes and in my mind that means take out people and (if possible) any signs of civilization. There really weren't that many birders around, but a lot of hunters.
Rufous Hummingbird N/A Great photo! I noticed a young male Rufous Hummingbird at my feeder yesterday. They must be beginning to migrate through.
